Feeding our Keiki and Kapuna

Meals can be picked every Friday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the Honoka‘a Hongwanji Buddhist Temple

“Feeding our Keiki and Kupuna” is an important community meal program, which has become a critical resource for many. The Peace Committee of Honokaa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple has instituted additional food safety practices, distributing meals via drive-up only. This is to help reduce the chance of transmitting any illnesses via social contact, and is in line with public health directives.

The Peace Committee began its program, “Feeding Our Keiki,” which eventually evolved into Feeding Our Keiki and Kupuna. Every Friday, volunteers come together to prepare a meal in the kitchen, serving children from the Hamakua Youth Center and other members of the community, including the elderly, families in the community, and those in need. (As a gauge of the need for this program, more than 60% of students at the high school come from families who qualify for free or reduced lunches.)

The program has operated on a shoestring budget, with funding coming mainly from individuals donating cash and their time. The First United Methodist Church has provided a grant of $600 for the first year's operation. Hawaii Petroleum has made a contribution to defray the fuel costs of the weekly drive to Kona for donations from Costco and subsidized purchases from the Food Bank.

By now, the Peace Committee and volunteers have been able to provide more than 3,000 meals at no charge to the community. In partnership with Kupuna Malama Seniors Program, each month we are also able to provide 100 bags of groceries to the elderly, over 1,100 pounds of groceries.

Volunteers to help with preparation of the weekly Friday meals are welcome.   We work under supervision of certified food safety handlers.

Cautionary steps include “social distancing” and volunteers strictly follow Department of Health food handling and preparation guidelines as well as disinfecting techniques recommended by the federal Center for Disease Control.
